The Front Door – the door the architect of the home would consider the main entrance of the home is extremely important in Feng Shui.
In Feng Shui, the area immediately outside your front door, the door itself and the area immediately inside the door are symbolic of the overall energy of your home and your career. Here are 19 tips Feng Shui tips on how to use your Front Door to improve the overall energy of your home and your career.
#1 Make Sure Your Door(s) Works Well
Consider the Front Door of your home the “mouth” for all energy that enters your house. You want that energy to come inside without any impediment. Make sure your door and lock do not stick, that it does not swing open in a way it shouldn’t, it latches appropriately and there is nothing else preventing the door from working properly.
#2 Fix Chipped / Damaged Paint on the Front Door
As the Front Door of your home is the main entry point for all energy in Feng Shui, you want this entrance to be happy and vibrant – not run down and old in appearance. Fix any chipped or damaged paint on the door. Good news if paint is peeling, you can take a small piece of it to your favorite paint shop to have it matched. Make sure to only put on a little at first to ensure the color is correct.
#3 Ensure the Front Door is Easily Seen
Often people who have a hard time being seen for what they do at work or who they are in life also have a front door that is difficult to see or access. If this is the case for you, trim any bushes or landscaping that are preventing the door from easily being seen, or consider adding lighting, flowers or other landscaping to mark a path to your front door. You could also add a flag or similar “come hither” symbols near your main entrance.
#4 Have a Very Welcoming and New Welcome Mat
Tell me the truth – is your welcome mat more of a roly-poly farm than it is welcoming? Ignored welcome mats have a way of, ahum, wearing out their welcome. If it does not look very bright and cheery it is time to get a new happy mat.
#5 Sweep Your Porch
Oh the number of porches I have seen that are covered in dust, dirt and leaves from four falls back. Sweep that baby as if your career and home energy depend on it (because in Feng Shui – they pretty much do.)
#6 Add a Fountain
Motion around the Front Door helps attract good energy and water is a great sort of motion in this area. Consider adding a fountain – just make sure the water is not flowing away from your house. You don’t want to work hard to get good energy to your Front Door and then have a fountain’s water metaphorically “wash it away”.
#7 Don’t Put a Mirror Inside the House that Faces the Front Door
If you walk in your home and immediately see yourself in a mirror – the mirror should be moved. A mirror facing the Front Door pushes all of the energy you have worked hard to get IN – right OUT the door. You can put the mirror to the right or the left of the door (assuming it does not impede the door opening) but not immediately in front of you as you enter the house.
#8 Consider a Wind Chime, a Wreath or Welcoming Sculptures
In the spirit of making the outside of your Front Door feel welcoming and easily seen, consider adding a wind chime (that won’t annoy the neighbors), a wreath and/or a welcoming sculpture (put that one in the Love & Marriage corner of your entrance as an added bonus or this one is sweet too and great in the Helpful People & Travel or Creativity & Children area of your entrance). REMEMBER: Clutter is enemy #1 in Feng Shui. Add welcoming features to make your Front Door fun, but ensure what you add does not feel like clutter. A good rule of thumb is that 50% of all space should be empty.
#9 Ditch the Gargoyles, Lions and Rude Welcome Mats
What you put at your Front Door is what you will attract. If you put out defensive, scary and/or rude energy – guess what you are going to attract? Guess how the energy of your home will feel?
Now, imagine a Front Door area – inside and out – that feels happy, welcoming and vibrant. How would this change the energy of your home? And as the Front Door in Feng Shui is related to your career, how do you think this would impact your professional life?
#10 No Hanging Coats, Shoe Racks, Etc. Behind the Door
Just as the Front Door should function properly, it is important that it opens completely. This means you should not hang coats, coat racks, shoe racks or any other storage on the back of your Front Door.
#11 If You Enter and Immediately See a Staircase then Add Red Tape, A Rug and/or A Crystal
People who live in homes where there is a staircase immediately across from the Front Door often experience good energy come into their home – and then immediately leave. If this happens to you, place a piece of red tape above the door frame and/or under the lip of the bottom stair of the staircase. (It does not have to be seen to work.) You can also add a red rug at the bottom of the stairs and/or hang a 50 mm crystal between the Front Door and the staircase.
#12 If You Walk in and Immediately See a Wall, Add a Picture with Depth
Sometimes a wall is the first thing you see when you enter a home. Think of this as good energy immediately “hitting a wall”. If this is the case for you, add a photo or a piece of art that has a lot of depth to it. For example, you could put the picture of a long road, a photo of a mountain that is far off in the distance or a long flowing river (make sure the river appears to be flowing into the house).
#13 Good Lighting and All Functioning Light Bulbs
When you think about the energy of your home, you don’t want the first experience you have upon entering to feel dark and dim. Add lighting to brighten up these areas and make sure all lightbulbs function properly.
#14 No Storage of Rarely Used Items
The Front Door and the coat closet that is frequently near it often become the dumping ground for all things you don’t want or rarely use. If you are trying to attract good energy to your home and your career, you want the area immediately inside and outside of your Front Door to only be for things you regularly use and enjoy seeing. In other words, winter boots have no business being there in August and the rake has no reason to be there in February.
#15 No Mail, Newspaper, Coupon or Shoe Pile Near the Front Door
Oh the piles of mail, newspapers, shoes and coupons I have seen near people’s Front Doors. These my friends – must go. If you don’t want your career and the energy of your home to be crapped up, you can’t have a bunch of crap near your Front Door.
#16 Trim Landscaping that Looks Old and Tired
Homes where the landscaping looks old and tired frequently house people whose lives and careers feel, you guessed it, old and tired. If you want a happy and vibrant home and career, make the landscaping look the same.
#17 Add Symbols of What You Want Your Career to Be
Because the Front Door is the area of your home most closely related to your career in Feng Shui, it is good to have symbols of the career you want in this area. Symbols can include a business card of someone who has a job similar to what you want or could help you get the career you desire, books related to the type of job you crave, art/symbols/photos or objects reminding you of your professional aspirations or even a printed off job description of your dream role. REMEMBER – nothing in Feng Shui needs to be seen to work. Feel free to put these things in a drawer, in a book, on a shelf, behind a piece of art, etc.
#18 Remove Any Reminders of What You Don’t Want or Like About Your Career
Like putting symbols of the career you want near the Front Door, you should avoid symbols of the job you DO NOT want here. For example, if you don’t like your current job because you are perpetually tethered to your laptop – don’t leave your computer here. If you want to leave your current job and it requires certain clothes, shoes, boots or jackets – don’t keep these in this area.
#19 ***Before You Get Started – Know You Can Do One, Some or All of These***
Don’t feel as if you have to do all or even most of these. Do what feels right. Do one or two suggestions and see what shifts in 24 hours to three weeks. If the energy of your home and the energy of your career changes to what you want then — voila! If the energy has not shifted to where you want your career and home energy to be, do a little more and repeat as necessary.
#20 And If You Live In an Apartment or Somewhere You Can’t Modify Your Exterior Door
Just work on the area immediately inside your main entrance.
