Can you Feng Shui just about anything? You sure can. Your house, a room, your car, your desk, the list is endless.
To Feng Shui your desk for money and job success, you simply lay the Bagua map over it and make a few strategic Feng Shui changes. (For those of you who are not familiar with the Bagua or need a refresher see the image below.)
#1 Know the Different Feng Shui Areas on Your Desk
Assuming you are sitting in the middle of your desk, you sit directly in the Career area of the Bagua Map. Mentally divide your desk into 9 equal-sized areas. Looking at the Bagua map below you can see that the Money area is the far left corner of your desk. The Helpful People & Travel area is immediately to your right. Your Love & Marriage area is the farthest right corner and so on.
#2 Add a Change Bowl or a Piggy Bank in Your Money Corner
If you follow me on Facebook or Instagram, you know I am frequently posting success stories on how I never see this Feng Shui tip – not work. Want money to appear seemingly out of nowhere? Add a change bowl or a piggy bank in your Money corner. Ideally, you would continually add to this as you can and not take money out of it. Although, I have seen it work numerous times just by placing $5 there.
Personal note, I did this to my desk; went out to dinner that night; ran into my old boss and he gave me a new job and a 30% raise. It works, my friends.
#3 Put Symbols of Your Accomplishments, People You Admire or Symbols of What You Would Like to Be Known For in Your Reputation Area
Your Reputation area in Feng Shui is where you put what you are known for, what you are proud of achieving or symbols of what you want to be known for. This is also the perfect place to put reminders of people who inspire you or people who you aspire to be like.
#4 Place Reminders of Your Creativity or How You Want to Be Creative in Your Creativity & Children Corner
Success relies heavily on creativity. If there is an area of your career where you want to be more creative or are particularly creative, put a symbol or a reminder of it here. If you want to celebrate creativity or be reminded of it, this is the perfect place to put a little piece of art.
#5 Write Wishes For Your Career and Put Them in Your Creativity & Children Corner
Take a silver box and inside of it place individual pieces of paper where you wrote your career wishes. You need to write them as if they have already happened. For example, “I am so excited to have landed X client.” “I am thrilled I was promoted to X position.” “I am proud of myself for getting a XX% raise.” One wish per piece of paper.
#6 If Your Desk Faces a Wall Move It, So You Can See People Approaching or Put Up a Mirror
People who face a wall often find it difficult for opportunities to find them. People who sit with their back to the door often feel vulnerable at work or feel as if something is always sneaking up on them or that problems arise out of nowhere. If this is you, it is best to arrange your desk, so you are looking outward and towards the door. If this is not possible, put up a mirror, so you can see people coming. You can either use a computer mirror attached to your monitor or a traditional mirror you prop up on your desk or hang on the wall in front of you.
#7 Put the Names of People Who Help You, Can Help You or Drive You Crazy in Your Helpful People & Travel Corner
The Helpful People & Travel corner is where you put the names of, you guessed it, Helpful People. Helpful People is broadly defined as individuals who are actively helping you, people who you would like to help you or people who are very difficult (with the hope of them becoming less difficult). Write the names of these individuals on a piece of paper and put it in a drawer, in a book or behind something. You could also put their business card, a print out of their LinkedIn profile or a print out of their email or something else from online that mentions them.
#8 Add Reminders of Skills You Want to Grow in Your Skills & Knowledge Corner
Want to learn a new skill? Put a reminder of that skill, a book you want to read on the subject or the business card of someone who can teach you, in the Skills & Knowledge area of your desk.
#9 Declutter Your Desk
My husband, a big traveler, always tells me – you can’t put anything into a full backpack without emptying it first. This goes for your desk too.
You can’t expect anything new in your career while it is still overflowing with the old. Go through your desk. First look for anything that is not related to a successful career and either put it where it belongs, recycle it, sell it, donate it or throw it away.
With the pile of career things that remain go through them and separate paperwork from non-paperwork. For paperwork, I like the Marie Kondo method of dividing it into three piles 1) papers you need to do something about (e.g. pay a bill, make a phone call, etc.), 2) paperwork you must keep and 3) paperwork that sparks joy. Any paperwork not in these piles should be recycled.
For anything that is not paperwork, ask yourself if you love it dearly or use it yearly. If the answer is yes, keep it. If the answer is no, donate it, sell it, recycle it, give it to a friend (who wants it) or throw it away.
#10 Remember You Can Do One, Some or All of These
Do not feel as if you have to do all or even a few of these Feng Shui tips. Do the one that feels good and see what happens. If you get what you want or are starting to see a shift in anywhere from a few hours to a few weeks then you have done enough. If you are still not seeing a shift after a few weeks, do another thing and repeat as necessary.
#11 Know that Nothing Needs to Be Seen to Work
Not looking forward to seeing a reminder of someone you can’t stand in the Helpful People & Travel area of your desk everyday? Not to worry! Nothing in Feng Shui needs to be seen to work. Feel free to stuff anything (even your piggy bank), in a drawer, behind something, in a book, etc.
