Feng Shui probably can’t fix depression, but it can certainly help. Here are a few tips to support you. Please know you don’t have to do all or even some of these ideas. Start with one and go from there as time and energy allows.
Fix Leaky Faucets and Pipes
There is a close relationship between water and sadness. In homes where there is substantial grief, you will often find unexpected leaks, or worse, floods. If you have a leaky faucet, pipe or water damage get it fixed. It is not only good Feng Shui, it will also save you money.
Add Images, Reminders or Symbols of Nature
You can’t go wrong with nature. It is beautiful. It is peaceful. It is inspiring. It is balanced. If you want to add art or replace art that isn’t doing it for you, consider adding mother nature.
Investigate Your Home Like a Stranger Would to Identify Low Vibing Stuff
I want you to go to the room where you spend the most time. I want you to look at what is on the walls, the furniture, the decor. If you took a picture of those things and sent them to a stranger, would that stranger say the room is happy, warm and cozy, or would that stranger say it appeared sad, cold, worn out and uncomfortable? To the fullest extent possible, anything that would not pass the stranger test should be donated, sold, recycled, given away or thrown away.
Get Rid of Bad Memory Belongings
We get so accustomed to that “thing” just being “there”, that we don’t even see it anymore. We don’t even realize it gives us that little pit in our stomach or that little micro-frown on our face or spirit. This is especially true for gifts we don’t want, things given to us by people we think suck or belongings that for one reason or another bring up bad memories. Think: the work shirt you had to wear at that insufferable conference, the 84th kitten-themed mug you got from Aunt Louise or that deeply lame gift you got from that deeply lame ex-boyfriend.
Out with all of it, I say!
We want you surrounded by happy things to the fullest extent possible.
Remove “Stuck” Stuff
What is happening in our house is what is happening in our life. If your life feels stuck, it is practically a guarantee that something(s) in your house feels stuck. Usually the culprit is clutter. Start with a drawer, a part of a room or an entire room, which ever feels least overwhelming. Look at everything in that area. Ask yourself if a belonging there is something you love dearly or use yearly. If the answer is no, and it is not something critical such as a passport or recent tax documents, sell it, donate it, recycle it, give it away or throw it away. You will feel — so. much. better.
Clean Your Drains
Water has many meanings in Feng Shui. How your “water” is in Feng Shui is typically in much alignment with how life (and money) flows to you. Stuck drains means a stuck life. Get those babies clean. This is my favorite, most environmental, quickest and cheapest way to clear clog drains. All you need is baking soda, vinegar and hot water.
Take a Good Hard Look at Your Bedroom
Your Bedroom is where you spend the most time. Where you spend the most time should be your #1 Feng Shui priority.
Ideally your Bedroom should:
- Be comprised of warm soothing colors
- Have two identical nightstands
- Only have things in closets and drawers that you love, use frequently and/or feel great wearing
- Have equal access to both sides of the bed
- Not have too much white
- Not have electronics (or at least all electronics turned off at night)
- Not have work-related or fitness-related items
- Not store your modem or router
- Not have anything under the bed
- Not have clutter
- Not have any pictures of anyone except for you and your partner
- Not have more than one or two books
Remove “Downward” Stuff
What you often see in the home’s of people who suffer from depression or are suffering from depression is a lot of “downward” things. This is especially true in their art. Their art will have rivers flowing downward, waterfalls, people or animals looking and/or people or animals moving downward. If this is the case with you, why don’t you take it down for two to eight weeks and see how that changes how you feel.
Clean Up Your Front Door
In Feng Shui, the Front Door of your home is symbolic of the overall energy of your home and your Career. If your energy hasn’t been where you want it to be, spruce up your front door. Get rid of the welcome mat that is turning into a roly-poly farm and consider replacing it with a cheerful mat. Remove any old mail, garden tools, broken chairs and anything else that doesn’t belong there, is worn out or doesn’t put a smile on your face. Consider adding a cheerful sculpture or wreath. And, of course, sweep it, dust it and make it look pretty.
Get Rid of Very Heavy Things
Sometimes we feel weighed down because our houses are weighed down. This could be because of extremely heavy furniture, accessories, large stones, heavy storage boxes, heavy art and/or musical equipment. Remove these things to the fullest extent possible.
Identify “Slow” Things in Your Home
If your home has images of turtles, slow moving (or not at all moving) water, slow moving (or not at all moving) transportation – this impacts your “speed” as well. Consider taking these down for two months and see how it changes your energy level.
Open All the Curtains, Blinds, Windows and Doors
You get rid of the old by pushing it out with the new. If you are feeling blue open all curtains and blinds daily. Then open all windows and doors on a weekly basis (weather permitting).
Incorporate Objects that Move, Have Sound and/or a Good Smell
If you are feeling down, we want to get objects that can lift your spirits around you. In Feng Shui, a good way to do this is which objects that have movement, an enjoyable sound and/or a pleasant smell.
Add Light and Lighter Colors
What you quickly learn in Feng Shui is how people describe their homes is also how they frequently describe their lives. When people talk about being in a “dark” mood. They also frequently have many dark colored walls, furniture, decor and lighting. If this is the case for you, and it is not possible to change these areas of your home, add touches of lighter colors. For example, add bright colored pillows. You can also add lights to areas of your home that feel particularly dark. If there is a part of your home where you frequently sit but have a hard time reading or doing everyday tasks – this portion of your home is a perfect candidate for a new light!
