The Bathroom in Feng Shui supports your health and vitality. (It also has a number of Feng Shui hazards that need a few extra looks and consideration.) Here are a few quick Feng Shui tips to improve how your Bathroom feels and to help it attract vitality and health into your life.
#1 Keep the Toilet Seat Down
The problem with the Bathroom is there are a lot of opportunities for things (aka good energy) to “go down the drain”. As there is generally little in life we want “to go down the drain”, we want to add certain protections to the bathroom.
First and foremost, keep that toilet seat down. It keeps good energy from going down, ahum, the crapper – and bonus – does anyone really want a view inside the toilet? Not so much.
#2 Keep Drains Closed
Similar to the the toilet allowing good energy to go down “the drain” the sink and shower drains do the same. While I personally find it a bit inconvenient to keep the sink drain closed, I always keep the shower drain shut. If you are worried about your home losing any kind of energy – keep your shower drain closed when you are not using it.
#3 Avoid Blue and Black
Much of Feng Shui is about balancing the elements – water, fire, earth, metal and wood. In Bathrooms we have two things going on. First, there is a LOT of water. Second, water (and energy) have a lot of opportunities to flow “down” and “out”. In Feng Shui, each element has a color(s) associated with it. Water is associated with blue and black. As Bathrooms already naturally have so much water, it is best to avoid anything else that is symbolic of it – including these colors.
#4 Avoid Water Symbols, Photos or Art
As Bathrooms already have excessive water, it is best to avoid additional symbols of water to the fullest extent possible. With that said, avoid adding objects, accessories, photos or art that are explicitly remind you of water.
#5 Add Earth Colors and Objects Made from Earth
The five Feng Shui elements interact with each other in different ways. Some are supportive of one another while others help slow or even destroy one another. While slowing down or being destructive might sound like something you want to avoid – this isn’t always the case. In Feng Shui, earth is considered to slow down water. You can balance places that have excessive water (such as Bathrooms) with earth. Examples of earth include, items made of, symbolic of or depicting – clay, pottery, brick, cement, crystals or stone. It also includes square-shaped items and then earth-tones (browns and oranges).
#6 Remove Any Products You Haven’t Used in the Last Year
Clutter is the kryptonite to Feng Shui. In the case where there is excessive clutter, I would recommend that is addressed first prior to doing too much Feng Shui. One of the primary sources of clutter in the bathroom are all the products we bought and thought we would use but didn’t, bought and they didn’t live up to their promises (when does that ever happen, right?) and we have yet to get rid of them, are mini bottles we were given as samples or took from hotels, etc. etc. A good rule of thumb is if you haven’t used them this year – you probably aren’t going to use them next year either. And frankly, at what point does using products that are multiple years old get a little – gross.
#7 Keep the Bathroom Door Closed
Because of the aforementioned multiple drains that can leak out all of the good energy you have worked so hard to nurture, it is best to keep the bathroom door closed as extra protection from energy leaks.
#8 Avoid Art, Symbols or Photography that Feel “Downward”
You might gather by now that in Feng Shui considerable work is done to remediate the downward / draining energy. We don’t want to exacerbate this (or undo other efforts) by adding art, symbols, accessories or photography that is downward. Think of anything that is falling, arrows going downward, people looking downward, art arranged going from up to down the wall, etc.
#9 Add Healthy and Light (in Color and Weight) Accessories and Colors
In Feng Shui, it is helpful to choose decor and accessories that are symbolic and enhance the idea of the room. As the Bathroom is about your vitality and health – take a look around your bathroom and look at the objects, accessories, colors and decor. When you are in your Bathroom do you feel healthy and light? How does the color of the walls make you feel? The accessories? Any other decor? Make sure everything, to the extent possible, celebrates, enhances and supports your health and vitality.
#10 Get Rid of Medicine You No Longer Need or Use
Old medicine, from a Feng Shui perspective, is never good to keep around. The reason? You don’t want to hold unto memories of poor health. Here is how the FDA recommends you get rid of old medicine.
#11 Unclog Those Drains
Clogged drains are symbolic of clogged energy. And clogged drains in your bathroom, means clogged energy around your health and vitality. My go to environmentally friendly drain clogging technique using baking soda and vinegar can be found here. (I find you have to do it a few more times than they suggest.)
#12 And, Of Course, Keep It Clean and Get Rid of the Clutter
Oh, clutter and messes. Not exactly a fun time but it feels so, so wonderful to get rid of it. AND – cleaning it up is fantastic Feng Shui. Look at what you have in the bathroom. Ask how it supports your daily (and current) health and vitality. If it doesn’t support your idea of health and vitality – donate it, sell it, toss it or recycle it.
